Oracle Hospitality OPERA: Touch-First UI for a Legacy Property Management System

Design

Problem

OPERA is a legacy property management application, and most users run it on iPad, so the redesign challenge was UX-only: no backend changes were possible, yet the interface still had to become touch-friendly, easy to navigate, and able to fit more relevant stats and data on one screen without excessive scrolling. The work also spanned exploring OPERA V5 to identify which features needed to migrate as the product moved to OPERA V9 Cloud.

Approach

  • Built a reusable Visio pattern and template library of ADF components covering desktop, tablet, and mobile.
  • Explored OPERA V5 feature by feature to map what needed to carry over as the team migrated to OPERA V9 Cloud.
  • Redesigned the Mobile Registered Reservations dashboard for touch-first, iPad-led use.
  • Revised OPERA Cloud functional-document mockups per each product manager's feedback.
  • Created stencils for the OPERA UI 2.0 component library in Visio.
  • Proposed new UI components benchmarked against current industry standards for adoption into OPERA UI 2.0.

Outcome

The Visio pattern library and stencil set gave the OPERA UI 2.0 team a consistent, touch-first design language to redesign the interface around, reworking the experience end to end without a single backend change.
